Does Verizon Drug Test for Employment?

“Does Verizon drug test for employment?”. This is a question on the minds of many of those looking to secure a job in the mobile and communications business in general, and Verizon in particular. The truth is that failing a surprise drug test can greatly compromise the odds of the recreational drug user getting a job.

Perhaps a person plans on quitting completely once they secure a job or would like to continue to use recreational drugs responsibly.

That’s why I decided to conduct research on whether or not Verizon, one of the largest communication companies in the world, drug tests for employment. Hopefully by the time you finish reading the results of my research you’ll have all the information you need in order to secure a job at Verizon.

Verizon Company Facts

Verizon is a well known name in the world of communications and is based in New York City, New York. The company has been expanding since its founding by acquiring online service providers such as AOL and Yahoo. Verizon Wireless has been America’s largest wireless communications service provider since 2014.

Verizon employs over 140 thousand employees, which can partially explain why so many people look for a job with the company. Plenty of jobs are available in numerous fields at Verizon. You could work as a communication technician, customer service representative, retail sales representative, or even as a network operations technician if you have the right credentials.

In addition, you could apply for a job in administration or management at corporate headquarters; however such positions are more competitive. You can work in HR, accounting, marketing, or numerous other positions at corporate headquarters available at Verizon if you feel like your CV is competitive enough. Corporate jobs obviously pay better and give one more job security.

Verizon Drug Test Policy in 2023

Verizon’s drug test policy changed in early 2018. Luckily for recreational drug users, this change is a little more lenient than the previous policy. However, there are still situations where you’ll be required to pass a drug test, but I’ll get into that a little bit later.

If you are asked for a drug test by your supervisor at Verizon, you’ll be tested for marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, heroin, and all other substances included in a regular drug screen. Those who show up positive for any of these substances can expect to face serious consequences, including job termination.

What to Expect During Verizon Hiring Process

It takes about a month for a person to get hired at Verizon from time of initial job application. Sometimes it’s less and sometimes it’s more. To get started, first of all you’ll naturally need to submit your job application. Next, you can expect to go through a few phone interviews. If you pass the phone interviews, you’ll be called in for an ‘in-person’ job interview and undergo a background check.

If you complete all of these steps successfully, you can be expected to be hired by Version. Some people get hired within a week, while others wait up to 2 months for the results of the interview process. If you feel like there’s an unreasonable delay in receiving the results of your application, then call them to ensure everything is okay and that they received and are processing your application.

Does Verizon Do Pre-Employment Drug Testing?

No, they don’t. Verizon used to do pre-employment drug testing. However, this is no longer to case. As mentioned above, the company changed their policy in early 2018 and has since stopped drug testing applicants.

This is good news for those who have an interview soon, but haven’t had enough time to detox from whatever they’re using.

Keep in mind that since their policy changed once, it can change again. So follow up regularly to be sure there hasn’t been another change in their policy if you plan to apply for a job there. One sure way to know if you can expect to undergo a drug test at Verizon as part of the pre-employment process is to ask people who have been recently hired there.

Does Verizon Do Random and Pre-Promotional Drug Test?

The company is unlikely to randomly drug test you. However, you will certainly be tested if you are involved in a work related accident or appear high or under the influence of drugs while on the job. If you wish to keep doing drugs in your spare time while working at Verizon, or anywhere else for that matter, make sure you don’t show up for work high.

Showing up to work high can lead to a drug test, which will probably show up positive and get you fired. There’s no reason to take the risk if you’re happy with your job and the way things are going at work.

It’s not clear if Verizon tests for drugs as part of the promotion process.  Therefore, if you think you’re up for a promotion then you should more than ever abstain from drugs just to be sure.

What Kind of Drug Test Does Verizon Use?

If you’re going to need to take a drug test for any reason at Verizon, it’s going to be a urine drug test. You’ll urinate in a cup and give them the sample so they can send it to one of the labs they have an agreement with for testing.

Can You Fail a Drug Test at Verizon if You Use Prescription Drugs?

No, there’s no way you can fail a drug test for using prescription drugs. To clear up any confusion that might possibly happen, make sure to tell your interviewer or HR that you’re on a prescription for a drug that may show up positive on a drug screen.

They might ask for your doctor’s contact info to confirm that you’re on a prescription. However, they’re not allowed to ask what you’re taking or why you’re taking it. So don’t disclose that information voluntarily.

How to Pass Urine Drug Test at Verizon?

As I mentioned above, if you are involved in an accident at work or seem high under the influence of drugs you will be drug tested. As stated above, you will be asked to perform a urine drug test.

If this happens you should be aware of the following facts that give an indicator of your chances of passing the test.

These facts are:

  1. Light users – might test positive for THC for up to 4-5 days from the time of their last use,
  2. Moderate users – might test positive for up to 10-12 days after their last use, and
  3. Heavy user-might test positive from 35 to 90 days.

If you are a light or moderate user, having a detox drink like Mega Clean or Herbal Clean QCarbo32 handy should be helpful in such a situation.

However, if you are a heavy user, there is a very high chance that you will fail your test despite using any detox products especially if you have recently used marijuana.

If you still test positive on a home urine drug test after completing detox program, drinking a detox drink, or caught by surprise with your test, you might consider using synthetic urine. This may work for an unsupervised test. However, there is always the risk of being caught and facing penalties for such action.

Summery

Basically, Verizon does not drug test for employment. This policy was introduced in 2018 and they haven’t been drug testing applicants since then. However, they still retain the right and will most certainly to ask you for a urine sample for testing if you’re involved in a work related accident or if you appear to be  high while on the job.
