Does Uber Drug Test Its Drivers?

“Does Uber drug test its drivers?” This is a question that I found to be quite popular among those looking for employment as a driver. The multinational transportation company is such a great place to work. After all, the only real skill you need to have is the ability to drive a car.

Also, the job can be quite financially rewarding. So, people often wonder if the company drug tests employees before hiring them as drivers to represent the company. That’s why I decided to find out whether or not Uber drug tests for employment.

Those who use drugs recreationally usually have a more difficult time getting jobs than those who don’t. A lot of companies still don’t prefer to hire those who use drugs. So it’s important for you to do your homework before applying for a job at a company such as Uber.

Uber Company Facts

Uber is a multinational transportation company that was founded in 2010, less than 10 years ago. The company is based in San Francisco and is present in over 700 metropolitan areas throughout the world. The premise behind Uber is that the company hires regular civilians to give rides to customers. The service relies on the internet and an app. Payment can be done via cash or credit card.

Over 20,000 people are currently employed by Uber, with about half of them in the United States. The other half of Uber’s work force is located on over other 60 other countries throughout the world.

Naturally the jobs available at Uber aren’t really that diverse. The overwhelming majority of Uber employees are drivers. However, there are other jobs available with Uber like customer and technical support as well as corporate positions.

If you prefer to work in administration, then you should apply to the company’s HQ for jobs in accounting, marketing, or any other corporate position.

Most people who work at Uber, however, work there as drivers. You don’t need to be a professional driver or anything like that. As long as you’re a decent driver with a driving license then you’re good to apply at Uber. This applies not just in the United States, but to almost all other countries where the company operates.

Uber Drug Test Policy in 2023

Uber has a strict no drug policy. The company will not tolerate drug use by any of their employees while on the job. It’s completely unacceptable to drive while under the influence and put yourself and your passenger(s) at risk of  injury or death.

If you’re asked to take a drug test by Uber, you can expect to be tested for several drugs include marijuana, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, opioids, and cocaine.

What to Expect During Uber Hiring Process

The hiring process at Uber is one of the simplest around. You start by submitting an application online. The application should contain a scan of your driver’s license and a copy of your criminal background check among. Uber will also need to know what kind of car you’ll be driving while on the job.

There’s really no interview process. This is good news for those who get anxious during job interviews. If your paperwork checks out, then you can create an account with the company, download their app, and get to work. The whole process takes very little time from start to finish to be hired at Uber – and start making money.

Does Uber Drug Test Its Drivers?

Uber does not do pre-employment drug tests. The hiring process is fairly simple and straightforward as mentioned earlier.

You’ll only need to provide a scan of your background check and driver’s license,  as well as provide some proffer that your car complies with Uber’s rules and guidelines. For example, in most countries Uber won’t  accept use of cars manufactured before 2010.

Drug tests aren’t part of their hiring process. Therefore, you won’t be asked to provide a urine sample or anything like that while applying to work at Uber. This is good news for those who use drugs recreationally as it eliminates a serious obstacle in the path of getting a job.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean you should drive while on drugs. That could lead to serious harm to you and any Uber customer riding with you.

Does Uber Do Random and Pre-Promotional Drug Tests?

Uber doesn’t carry out scheduled or random drug tests on its drivers/employees. The company will normally only drug test you if you’re involved in an accident. If you’re involved in a driving accident, then you’ll most likely be asked to provide a urine sample for drug testing within 24 hours of the accident.

They’ll probably know that you were in an accident when the customer riding with you reports the incident. This should be an added incentive for Uber drivers to drive sober.

It’s not clear whether or not Uber drug tests an employee before promotion. This is rather irrelevant as there aren’t really many promotions at Uber. After all, the vast majority of people at Uber work as drivers.

So there’s no hierarchy for employees to climb. For example, there’s no manager position available. Basically, the only thing for an Uber driver/employee to worry about is getting in an accident and having to submit a sample of their urine for drug testing. Other than that, the odds of getting drug tested at Uber are almost non-existent.

What Kind of Drug Test Does Uber Use?

Uber uses a urine drug test when necessary. As mentioned earlier, this is normally only if one of their drivers is involved in an accident. They’ll take the driver’s urine sample and send it to a lab for testing. The independently contracted lab will analyze the sample and  send the results back to Uber.

Can You Fail a Drug Test if You Use Prescription Drugs?

No, you can’t fail a drug test at Uberif you’re on prescription drugs. Just tell the person responsible for hiring you at Uber that you’re on prescription drugs that may show up as positive on a drug test if you are involved in an accident. You can also provide Uber with your doctor’s contact info so they can confirm that you’re on a particular prescription. Don’t tell them what you’re taking or why you’re taking it though. You’re not obliged to disclose this information to your employeer.

How to Pass Drug Test at Uber?

If you don’t use marijuana often (1-2 times a week) and have abstained for at least 6-10 days before your urine drug test you should pass your urine test in flying colors.  By using a home urine drug test one hour in advance of your test will help you know if you can will pass your test or not.

However, if you are a heavy user (smoke marijuana every day), your odds of passing your test are very low as you will most likely test positive for THC from 35 to 90 days since your last  use.

Summery

In summary, Uber is a great place to work and a popular way to make money. Luckily, for recreational drug users, the company doesn’t drug test applicants before hiring. However, if you’re involved in an accident you’ll need to take a drug test within 24 hours.

So, the best and safest approach is to avoid using any recreational drugs while having a job at Uber.
