“Does FedEx drug test for employment?” This is a question that is no doubt on your mind if you are a user of recreational drugs and looking for a job with them. FedEx is one of the largest shipping companies in the world, ranking just behind UPS and DHL. So it’s reasonable to think about getting a job with FedEx if you are interested in working in the delivery service industry.
Getting a job for someone who uses drugs recreationally isn’t as easy as it is for non-drug users. Lots of companies still discriminate against people who use recreational drugs such as marijuana despite weed being legal in many states.
So I’ve decided to look into the matter for those of you thinking about applying for a job with the company in order to find out whether or not FedEx drug tests for employment.
FedEx Company Facts
FedEx was founded in 1971, almost half a century ago. The company has withstood the test of time and maintained its reputation of being one of the best and most reliable delivery service company in the world. Its shipping is fast and it offers real time updates on the location of its packages.
Over 400 thousand people are currently employed by FedEx according to statistics collected in 2018. Since it’s such an attractive place to work, I thought it would be useful to know more about the company’s drug test policy and hiring process.
There are several different types of jobs available at FedEx, with package handling being the most plentiful. There are also lots of driver positions and many warehouse jobs available. You could also apply for jobs at company HQ, which include working in one of several different departments – including marketing, HR, accounting, and administration.
FedEx Drug Test Policy in 2024
FedEx has a strict no drug policy. Being high on the job is not tolerated at FedEx and can be quite risky as the company has the right to random drug test at any time. If you’re subjected to a drug test before or during your employment at FedEx, you can expect to be tested for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, methamphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and many other illicit substances.
A company on such a global scale with a reputation like FedEx’s definitely won’t tolerate drug use at work. So you must be careful.
What to Expect During FedEx Hiring Process
The hiring process at FedEx is fortunately quite simple. You start by going to their website and browsing for available jobs in your city. Once you find a job that interests you and you think you qualify for, you apply for it online. If FedEx is interested in your application, you should receive a call or email inviting you in for an interview within a few days.
Through my research I found interviews to be quite easy and most applicants are able to pass them without difficulty. Once you pass your interview you’ll start working at FedEx shortly thereafter.
Does FedEx Always Drug Test for Employment?
The unfortunate answer is yes. FedEx drug tests its prospective employees as part of the interview process. One exception to this rule is that package handlers aren’t usually tested.
Luckily, this is the most prevalent job available at FedEx and the one that most people apply for.
So, those who want to apply for a job as package handler at FedEx can usually continue using drugs recreationally on their own time as long as they don’t show up for work high.
On the other hand, those applying for any other type of job at FedEx need to take extra care. Failing to pass a pre-employment drug test will rule you out from getting the job. If you really care about getting hired at FedEx, then you should abstain from drugs at least a couple of months before applying online to make sure your body is drug free by the time of the job interview.
Drivers especially need to be drug free, not just for company policy but for their own safety and the safety of others.
Does FedEx Do Random and Pre-Promotional Drug Test?
FedEx has the right to randomly drug test you at any time. You agree to this when you sign your employment contract on getting hired. Whether or not FedEx actually use this right is completely up to the company. However, FedEx doesn’t normally exercise their right to randomly test their employees.
One instance where you will definitely be tested is if your manager or supervisor suspects that you’re under the influence of drugs or high while at work. This will prompt a drug test. If the test turns out positive, it will most likely lead to termination of your contract. FedEx won’t tolerate employees going to work high.
Existing employees who are up for promotion will be required to pass a drug test. Failing to pass the test will preclude them from getting the promotion, and most likely lead to termination of their employment contract.
What Kind of Drug Test Does FedEx Use?
FedEx uses a urine drug test. You’ll be asked to urinate into a cup and give them the sample.
They’ll then take it to one of the labs they have a contract with to be tested. Your urine will be tested for all the drugs mentioned earlier.
Can You Fail a Drug Test for Using Prescription Drugs?
No. It’s not possible for you to fail a drug test for being on prescription drugs that can show up positive on a urine drug screen. However, in order to avoid any confusion, you should inform your interviewer or someone from HR in advance that you’re on a prescription for drugs that may show up positive on a drug test.
You can also give them the contact info of your doctor so they can contact him or her to confirm that you’re on a prescription. Just remember that you’re not obliged to tell them what you’re taking or the reason you’re taking it. You shouldn’t give that info voluntarily either. Your doctor should also know that he/she is not to disclose the information if they are asked by FedEx.
How to Pass Urine Drug Test at FedEx?
There are three important facts that will help you to choose the best approach in order to increase your chances of passing your urine test at FedEx.
- Light users– might test positive for THC for up to 4-5 days from the time of their last use,
- Moderate users – might test positive for up to 10-12 days after their last use, and
- Heavy users-might test positive from 35 to 90 days.
If you are light or moderate marijuana user, you have a decent chance to passing your test if you have a handy detox drinks like Mega Clean or Herbal Clean QCarbo32 readily available. This should be taken on the day of your drug test.
However, if you are a heavy user, there is a high chance that you will fail your test using such detox drinks – unless you abstained from marijuana for a prolonged period of time (35-60 days) before your test.
Heavy users might significantly increase their chances of passing their urine test if they compete at least a 10 day whole body detox program, combined with light aerobic exercise, visiting sauna, drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet.
Summery
So to sum up, if you’re looking to work at FedEx, but you’re worried about drug testing, you should abstain from drugs a couple of months before your interview. Most jobs you apply for at FedEx will require you to pass a drug test – unless you’re applying for a job as a package handler.
