People who use drug recreationally often have a harder time getting a job because they usually fail an unexpected drug tests during the interview process for which they are not prepared. So it’s important for any prospective employee to know whether or not a company drug tests for pre-employment so they can prepare in advance. That’s why I researched the question ‘Does Michaels drug test for employment?’. My findings are set forth below.
Michaels Company Facts
As we’ve already mentioned, Michaels is the largest provider of merchandise for home decorations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. There are over 1,200 stores across North America despite the company being founded in 2013, just 6 years ago.
The rapid growth of the company is testimony to the great services they provide. With over 1200 stores present across North America, you’d expect Michaels to employ a large number of people. If so, you would be absolutely correct. That’s why Michaels is such a great place to work.
There are many different types of jobs available at Michaels. You can work at a local store in merchandise stocking, as a support specialist, or as a cashier. If you want to work in HR or accounting, then you can always search for jobs at the company’s headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Michaels Drug Test Policy in 2023
Fortunately for recreational drug users, Michaels doesn’t have a drug policy as strict as a number of other employers. You’re not likely to get drug tested during the interview process or while employed there.
Nonetheless, if a situation arises where you are asked to submit a sample for testing then you’ll be tested for amphetamines, opioids, marijuana (THC), barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and everything else covered by a drug screen.
What to Expect During Michaels Hiring Process
According to my research, the hiring process at Michaels is quite simple and straightforward. It usually doesn’t take much time either.
If you find a position that suits you at your local Michaels, all you have to do is fill out an application online, submit it, and wait for them to call you. They should call within a few days to set up your interview. If it takes them more than a week to do contact you, then you should give them a call to ask about the status of your application.
Most all applicants only go through one interview. As a matter of fact, for some applicants the interview process was no longer than 5 minutes and was simple. However, for others, the interview process was a bit more in depth with questions regarding previous employment, shifts, etc. So you must be prepared for anything.
Does Michaels Drug Test New Hires?
Luckily, the answer is predominately no. Michaels does not drug test new hires in the vast majority of its branches.
Some employees in New York and Washington branches, however, say that they were drug tested. Although we’re not sure whether or not that’s true, you should ask people who already work there to confirm if they were drug tested before being hired.
So, those of you who use marijuana or any other drug recreationally can rest easy. In almost all cases, Michaels doesn’t drug test before hiring a person. However, this does not give a person a free pass to show up for the interview high or under the influence. If so, you’ll most likely mess up the interview and not get the job.
Does Michaels Do Random and Pre-Promotional Drug Test?
Although in most instances there’s no drug testing as part of the interview process, you might want to quit using recreational drugs well before starting work at Michaels. The company still retains the right to drug test you at any time. While it is highly unlikely under current company policy that you will be drug tested without cause while at work, just be aware of the fact that company policies do change.
However, if you give your supervisor or manager at Michaels cause to suspect that you’re on drugs while at work, then he or she will certainly ask you to undergo a drug test. Failing the test will invariably get you fired. The same applies to being involved in a work related accident.
So even if you choose to keep doing drugs in your spare time while employed at Michaels, never show up for work high. Also, try not to be involved in a work related accident – although that is easier said than done.
I have been unable to gather enough reliable information to determine if Michaels always drug test before giving a promotion. However, it wouldn’t hurt you to stay clean if you’re up for one.
What Kind of Drug Test Does Michaels Use?
If you are ever tested for drugs at Michaels, they will use a mouth swab to test your saliva for drugs. Luckily, this is the easiest of the various drug test methods to pass, especially if you are aware of the test in advance.
Can You Fail a Drug Test if You Use Prescription Drugs?
No, it’s not possible to fail a drug test at Michaels because you’re on prescription drugs. Before undergoing the test just let the people at Michaels know that you’re on prescription for a drug that might show up positive on your test. You might also want to give them your doctor’s contact info so they can confirm with him or her that you really on the prescription.
They’re not allowed, however, to ask you or your doctor what condition necessitates you’re taking that particular prescription. Rest assured that you don’t need to provide that kind of information.
How to Pass a Drug Test at Michaels?
As I mentioned above, the saliva drug test is the easiest of the drug tests to pass. You should abstain from using marijuana in any form (i.e. smoking, vaping, eating edibles, drinking, etc.), for at least 48 hours in advance of your test. In addition, you should brush your teeth and gums properly and use a strong mouthwash like Listerine just before the test.
If you are caught by surprise, or cannot stop using marijuana for at least 24 hours before your test, you might consider to have a specially designed mouth detox product handy.
Summery
Basically recreational drug users can rest at ease. Michaels doesn’t usually drug test for pre-employment. In order to keep your job though, just don’t show up for work while high on drugs and avoid getting into any work related accidents while there. Then you should be fine.
