Does Office Depot drug test for employment? This is an important question for recreational drug users who intend to apply for work at Office Depot, one of the largest office supply companies in the nation. Those who don’t use drugs don’t need to worry. Those who do use recreational drugs should read further, as the answer to this question is likely to affect their employment prospects at Office Depot.
One of the main reasons that recreational drug users fail to get a job offer is that they’re unprepared for, and subsequently fail, an unanticipated drug test during their hiring process. This happens because they are unaware that a particular employer tests for drugs in the first place.
So, by familiarizing yourself in advance with a company’s drug policy, you can prepare for a mandatory drug test by abstaining before the job interview. That’s why I decided to conduct some research on the matter in order to find out if Office Depot does in fact drug test as part of their interview process.
Office Depot Company Facts
Office Depot has been around since 1986. Within 33 years, it’s become one of the largest companies in the country with annual sales in excess of 10 billion dollars. Office Depot has over 1,000 stores in the states with in excess of 38,000 employees. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense to look for a job at Office Depot since it’s a well known brand, with plenty of locations, and lots of job opportunities.
Numerous types of jobs are available at Office Depot that fit people who have different backgrounds and training experiences. You can apply for a job as stock associate, merchandise associate, sales associate, or even a job in administration at corporate headquarters.
Jobs at corporate headquarters are available in human resources, accounting, and marketing departments. In short, you can find a job at Office Depot regardless of your educational background and previous job experience.
Office Depot Drug Test Policy in 2024
Office Depot has a strict no drug policy. They won’t always drug test you, but that doesn’t mean that you can show up for your job interview or work under the influence of drugs. Doing so will most certainly lead to you not getting the job, or termination of your contract if already employed there.
Despite the fact that Drug tests aren’t frequent at Office Depot, the company still maintains a zero drug policy. So beware if you want to be employed, or continue work, at Office Depot!
If for some reason Office Depot does decide to drug test you, you can expect to be tested for marijuana, amphetamines, heroin, cocaine, opioids, as well as others. A positive test for any of these drugs at Office Depot will lead to serious consequences, including not getting the job, or being fired.
What to Expect During Office Depot Hiring Process?
The Office Depot hiring process is not long at all. Most of the employees that we spoke to reported that it took them less than a week to be hired from start of the interview process to finish. Actually, for some it only took 2-3 days to be hired.
You start the process by applying for a job that interests you. Someone from Office Depot should call you in for an interview within a matter of a day or two. If you do well on the interview, then you can expect to be hired and start orientation within the same week. Immediately after orientation, you start to work.
Does Office Depot Do Pre-Employment Drug Testing?
Office Depot doesn’t drug test for pre-employment. So don’t expect to be drug tested during your job interview as part of the hiring process.
This is great news for those applying for a job at Office Depot because a lot of highly qualified applicants at other companies end up not getting a job because they simply fail to pass a drug test. By not drug testing potential employees, Office Depot makes it more likely for recreational drug users to get a decent job there.
While this is excellent news for anyone looking for a job at Office Depot, it’s not an excuse to show up for an interview or work under the influence of drugs. The company may feel a need to test you for drugs as part of the hiring process; but, they won’t hesitate to test you it if you give them a reason to do so.
Does Office Depot Do Random and Pre Promotional Drug Testing?
As we were saying, Office Depot isn’t known for regular or continuous drug testing. Random and scheduled drug tests are uncharacteristic of the company. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean they won’t randomly test you or if you give them a reason to do so.
If you’re involved in a work accident, then you’ll likely be required to provide a urine sample to be screened for drugs. If the sample tests positive for drugs, you will most likely be fired. There’s no need to risk not being hired or losing a decent job at Office Depot by showing up for an interview or work high on drugs.
I didn’t find sufficient information on whether or not Office Depot drug tests their employees before giving a promotion. But as Office Depot does not normally test those applying for a managerial position, it’s unlikely that regularly test existing employees for promotion.
What Kind of Drug Test Does Office Depot Use?
But be warned! Like I said earlier, Office Depot will drug test you if you give them a reason. In most instanced, they test you through a urine drug test.
You’ll be asked provide a urine sample by urinating in a cup. The sample will then be sent to one of their contracted labs for testing. The lab will then send the test results back to Office Depot.
Can You Fail a Drug Test if You Use Prescription Drugs?
No. Those on prescription drugs have absolutely nothing to worry about. Just make sure that you let your interviewer know that you’re on a prescription for drugs that could show up as positive on a urine drug screen. This will avoid any confusion. To be absolutely sure, you can also provide Office Depot with the name and number of your doctor so they can confirm with him or her that you really are on a prescription.

How to Pass Drug Test at Office Depot?
If for any reasons you will have to face a random urine drug test at Office Depot, you need to be aware of the three following essential facts:
- If you are a light user of marijuana, you might test positive for THC for up to 4-5 days from the time of its last use,
- If you are a moderate user, you might test positive for up to 10-12 days after its last use, and
- If you are a heavy user, you might test positive from 35 to 90 days from last use.
If you are only a light to moderate user of marijuana, you have a good chance of passing your test if you abstain long enough from using marijuana before your drug test (as stated above). To be on the safe side, you might consider having a handy detox like Mega Clean or Herbal Clean QCarbo32 ready. Such detox drinks should be taken on the day of your drug test.
If you are a heavy user and haven’t abstained from drugs for at least 30-40 days before a random test, your odds of passing – even with a help of the above mentioned detox drinks – unfortunately is not very high (at best only 50/50).
We have seen that some heavy users try using synthetic urine as their emergency plan, if the urine drug test is unsupervised. However, there is always the risk of being caught and facing the dire consequences of such an action.

So to sum up, Office Depot doesn’t drug test for employment and is unlikely to randomly drug test existing employees. Nonetheless, the company won’t tolerate employees showing up high on the job. So take care and always have a clear head when applying for a job there or while at work.
