Does Marriott International Drug Test for Employment?

Does Marriott International Drug test for employment? That’s a question I found to be on the minds of many looking to work in the hotel industry, particularly at one of the largest and most prestigious hotel brands around the world. Unfortunately, applying for a job in the hotel service industry can be quite a complicated and stressful process for recreational drug users.

Lots of places require the prospective employee to take and pass a pre-employment drug test. Failure to pass the test will most certainly result in the prospective employee not getting a job offer even if every other part of their application process was perfect. That’s why I decided to do some research on the subject in order to find out whether or not Marriott International drug tests for pre-employment.

Marriott International Company Facts

Marriott International was founded in 1927, over 90 years ago. Since then the hotel brand has kept growing and hasn’t looked back yet. It’s no wonder that so many people are looking to work there considering the hotel chain employs almost 200 thousand people.

Marriott International is in fact the one of the largest largest hotel chain in the world. There are over 6,500 properties across 127 countries with over 1 million rooms available. There are also 195,000 rooms currently in development meaning the hotel chain isn’t slowing down at all. In 2017 the company was ranked #33 on Fortune’s 100 best companies to work for list.

As you’d expect at such a large chain, there are jobs to suit everyone. You could work in hospitality to deal with customers and satisfy their needs. You could also opt for a job at corporate working in departments like finance and marketing to name just a few. There are management positions available at various locations too. Basically, at Marriott International you’ll most definitely find a job to suit your skill set and job potential.

Marriott International Drug Test Policy in 2023

Marriott International has a very strict no drug policy, the enforcement of which is taken very seriously. You would  expect no less at such a prestigious hotel chain as Marriot International. Complaints from a customer that someone working at Marriott was under the influence at work would be completely unacceptable. The company has a reputation to uphold after all. So you can expect to be screened at any time for drugs.

Drugs you’re likely to be tested for include methamphetamines, marijuana, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and others.

What to Expect During the Marriott International Hiring Process

The hiring process at Marriott International is easy and straightforward. You can apply for a job simply by going to their website and selecting your location. You will most certainly find a list of available jobs at the Marriott location near you. From there you apply for a job that meets your interest and skill set and wait for them to contact you for an interview.

You should expect a Marriott to conduct a background check and ask you to submit to a drug test. If all goes well and you pass your drug test, then you should be hired soon enough. The interviews aren’t difficult. Just try to be pleasant and relaxed to ensure you pass with flying colors.

Does Marriott International Drug Test?

Yes, the overwhelming majority of Marriot International hotels do in fact test applicants before hiring. Failing to pass the drug test will most certainly rule you out from getting the job.

The turnover at Marriott isn’t high so they have the time and resources to screen everyone applying for a job there. As mentioned earlier, their brand reputation is at stake.

The timing of the drug test is variable. They might let you know before the interview or they might surprise you during the interview. So if you’re applying at a job at Marriott International, be prepared to face a drug test sooner or later.

Try to abstain from drugs before even before applying for a job online. This will ensure that you will pass the drug test, even if given by surprise during the interview process on short notice. Marriott International will rely on a mouth swab to test your saliva for illicit substances.

Does Marriott International Do Random and Pre-Promotional Drug Test?

Yes! As part of Marriott’s strict no drug policy you should expect to be tested randomly as well as before any promotion. However, not all Marriott International hotels test their employees on a regular basis.  One thing is for certain though, being involved in a work related accident, or your manager suspecting that you’re high on the job, will certainly result in your being required to take a drug test to ensure that you’re not in fact on drugs.

If you’re applying for, or expecting, a promotion in the near future, you should immediately abstain from drugs. Failing to pass a pre-promotion drug test won’t just stop you from getting the promotion, but will probably get you fired from your existing job.

What Kind of Drug Test Does Marriott International Use?

As stated earlier, Marriott International uses mouth swabs to test the individual’s saliva for drugs. This is the easiest of the various test methods to pass, especially if you are aware of the test in advance.

Can You Fail a Drug Test if You Are on Prescription Drugs?

There’s no way for you to fail a drug test if you’re only on prescription drugs. In order to avoid any mix up, you should inform your employer that you’re on prescription meds before they take the oral swab to test your saliva for drugs.

You can also give Marriott International the contact details of your physician so they can call him/her to confirm that you’re in fact on a prescription. They’re not allowed to ask what you’re taking or why you’re taking the prescription though. That information is protected by doctor/patient confidentiality.

How to Pass a Drug Test at Marriott Hotel?

As I mentioned above, the saliva drug test is the easiest of the test to pass. You should abstain from using marijuana in any form (i.e. smoking, vaping, eating edibles, drinking, etc.), for at least 48 hours in advance of your test. In addition, you should brush your teeth and gums properly and use a strong mouthwash like Listerine just before the test.

If you are caught by surprise, or cannot stop using marijuana for at least 48 hours, you might consider to have a specially designed mouth detox product handy.
